11TH ANNUAL EID-UL-FITR CELEBRATIONS - NOVEMBER 17, 2005

Dr. Haroon Siddiqui, Editorial Page Editor Emeritus, Toronto Star, was the Keynote Speaker and the Award Recipient.  Recipient of the Order of Canada, the Order of Ontario and several other awards, Dr. Haroon Siddiqui, was recognized for, “his contributions to enriching Canada’s public discourse, and public policy, by passionately advancing the idea of equal dignity for all groups, especially the aboriginal peoples, the Quebecois and new immigrants. He has repeatedly challenged the media's unjust and stereotypical coverage of minorities. His championing of the cause of human rights, democratic values and justice has been a sustaining source of inspiration for those who cherish Canada ’s pluralism”.

Dr. Siddiqui spoke about the issues facing the Muslim community since 9/11 and stated that the Muslim community is the biggest victim of the 9/11 tragedy.

Dr. Siddiqui was presented with a plaque and Sandulak's polar bear sculpture.

The Association of Progressive Muslims of Canada also paid tribute to the Veterans.  The plaque had the following inscription:  “In recognition of their heroic efforts and deeds, their courage and sacrifices that have made Canada and the world safer for us all. Young men and women from all walks of life, origins and faiths, and from our first nations, served side by side to defend the rights and freedoms of others.  They sacrificed their comforts, love and safety of home.  Many lost their lives and paid the ultimate sacrifice.  To them we pay homage.  The courage and achievements of our veterans will always be remembered. Lest we forget”.

The plaque and Keith Sandulak's polar bear sculpture were presented to Hon. Albina Guarnieri, Minister of Veterans Affairs, and representatives from some veteran organizations.

An Islamic art exhibition was arranged by Dr. Fazel Larijani, Cultural Attache for the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
